The new LiChess Tools game analysis layout
Intro
LiChess Tools is a browser extension that expands what Lichess can do, from analysis to new piece sets and graphical/sound themes, from interactive lessons you can play all variations in to playing against the Lichess database, from showing you how to get gambits to showing cloud evaluations directly into the Explorer. There are almost 200 features baked in and always adding more, all of them being configurable - you can pick and choose - and all for free forever.
New Layout
I've decided to reward a really well crafted feature request from a LiChess Tools user and try to improve the game analysis page layout. Didn't have much hope, because I am more of a coder and less of a designer, but in this case there were clear requirements of what was needed. And after some really convoluted CSS magic and a little bit of code integration with Lichess, here is the result:
As you can see, the board is as large as the screen, but there is no need to scroll down to see the evaluation or change the board size back and forth. Also, no more tabs on the bottom:> > > > the crosstable is something you can click to see, not taking space or causing unexpected popups
- the share section is moved under the board, the only thing requiring scroll down
- the move times and eval charts are moved in a new chat tab called Review - since let's be honest, no one really uses the Notes and Chat on a regular basis
Here is how it looks when the analysis is not yet requested, right after finishing a game:
This was just published, so it will have some bugs, but I am taking all feedback seriously and improving things as I go. This feature needs to be enabled in the LiChess Tools preferences:
Conclusion
There is room for improvement in Lichess, without sacrificing the minimalistic design of the site. In this case, it's all about keeping the focus on the page, without a need for extraneous scrolls or clicks. This thing is quite well thought out, so thank @DrTomHere for the effort of designing it and bringing it to me as an idea.
As usual, I love feedback and if you have similar ideas, I am always open to them. More than that, Lichess is open to many of these, and this blog post is not just a shameless plug of my extension, but also a case study of what can be achieved if we focus on the positive and what can be done to improve the experience.
Get LiChess Tools for Chrome/Edge/other Chromium based browsers: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/langlhlcknngldkeliapahbhbcmlcbcj or for Firefox/Firefox Android: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lichess-tools-by-siderite/ . New updates to the extension are always explained in the forum of the LiChess Tools users team.
Have fun with chess and let's make Lichess even greater !
Post scriptum
Some people with small monitors or with large scale settings were not getting the entire thing on the screen, so here is even further improvement:
